چکیده

MODIS medium-resolution (250and 500-m) bands were successfully used to detect and map the distribution of a harmful phytoplankton bloom (HAB) in the Paracas Bay, Peru, that caused economic losses estimated at about $28.5 million. A Red-Green-Blue combination of bands 1, 4 and 3 was used to visually distinguish the HAB while the turbidity index, a semi-quantitative measure of the amount of particulate material in the near-surface water, was used to estimate the intensity of the HAB. The turbidity index was inversely correlated with oxygen concentration in the bay. Temporary anoxia caused by the HAB was probably the main mechanism causing fish kills. The 250-m resolution provided by MODIS bands 1 and 2 is essential to detect localized HABs in coastal areas. While turbidity is not specific to algal blooms, it is a quantitative estimate of the intensity of the bloom once the existence of the bloom is detected by the RGB images.

Comparative Analysis of Four Models to Estimate Chlorophyll-a Concentration in Case-2 Waters Using MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Imagery

The occurrence and extent of intense harmful algal blooms (HABs) have increased in inland waters during recent decades. Standard monitor networks, based on infrequent sampling from a few fixed observation stations, are not providing enough information on the extent and intensity of the blooms. Remote sensing has great potential to provide the spatial and temporal coverage needed. Several sensor...

pollutions. Recently, both Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are experiencing several types of pollution including oil spills and heavy metal pollutions as well as Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) caused by biological and environmental changes. Theiroccurrence of the red tide or harmful algal bloom during fall and winter 2008-2009 caused numerous unknown factors in the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf and G...

A Harmful Algal Bloom of Karenia brevis in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico as Revealed by MODIS and VIIRS: A Comparison

The most recent Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is not equipped with a spectral band to detect solar-stimulated phytoplankton fluorescence. The lack of such a band may affect the ability of VIIRS to detect and quantify harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters rich in colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) because of the overlap of CDOM and chlorophyll absorption within th...

Satellite Retrievals of Karenia brevis Harmful Algal Blooms in the West Florida Shelf Using Neural Networks and Comparisons with Other Techniques

We describe the application of a Neural Network (NN) previously developed by us, to the detection and tracking, of Karenia brevis Harmful Algal Blooms (KB HABs) that plague the coasts of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite observations. Previous approaches for the detection of KB HABs in the WFS primarily used observations from the Mode...

Performance Analysis of MODIS 500-m Spatial Resolution Products for Estimating Chlorophyll-a Concentrations in Oligo- to Meso-Trophic Waters Case Study: Itumbiara Reservoir, Brazil

Monitoring chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations is important for the management of water quality, because it is a good indicator of the eutrophication level in an aquatic system. Thus, our main purpose was to develop an alternative technique to monitor chl-a in time and space through remote sensing techniques. However, one of the limitations of remote sensing is the resolution. To achieve a hig...
